Happy Hannuka

We lit the first candle last night. Of course, we had to go searching for Hannuka candles in the evening, and the first four shops we tried simply ran out. Fortunately, the fifth still had a few packs and we were able to light our Hannukia (aka Menorah in English – not sure why, as a Menorah in Hebrew is something different).

Hannuka is supposed to be a winter holiday. I guess we should be thankful it’s cloudy today, at least. Definitely a dry winter so far, with average rainfall at about 40% of what it should have been this time of year. We didn’t have a single proper storm yet either. Most days have been boringly sunny and dry. They say it will rain today, and at the sight of some dark clouds, the kids insisted on boots and umbrellas. May they use their Spiderman and Ben 10 umbrellas today for protection from the rain and not just as playing swords!

Don’t get me started on the spelling in English :p I have seen Chanuka, Channuka, Hanukah, Hanooka. They all would sound about the same to Hebrew speakers (and none sound just like the right way to pronounce it, as the English language lacks that phlegm-in-your-throat “Kh” sound, which Hebrew actually has two varieties of!).
