One last holiday (well, almost) for this holiday season in Israel. After Rosh Hashana (New Year’s) and Yom Kippur, we bring you… Sukkot – the holiday that gives your kids another seven days off school!
Our school decided to bridge Yom Kippur and Sukkot this year, saving the kids having to come for one confusing day in the middle of a long holiday. That way, they get to completely forget about school and enjoy a 2 weeks holiday time.
We didn’t build a Sukkah this year
IsraeliDad isn’t feeling too well, so we decided to skip it. For those of you who don’t know what a Sukkah is, here’s a picture from Wikipedia -

As you can see, it’s a kind of a temporary hut, for lack of a better word, made of a skeleton of wood, wrapped in sheets and with palm tree brances for a roof. The fun part is creating and putting up the decorations inside. Essentially, you’re supposed to eat in there for seven days, as a reminder of the time our ancestors spent in similar huts while escaping Pharoh and getting back to the Land of Israel. Religious people do observe the custom and eat and sleep in their Sukkah.
As for us, we celebrated in having dinner outside on the patio, with my in-laws. It was all very nice and we spent the rest of the evening playing a board game called Puerto Rico.
Happy Sukkot to those who celebrate!
