Sneeze and Cough into Your Elbow, Please!

My mother always told me to cover my mouth with my hand when sneezing or coughing. Like most Israelis, I never carry a hankerchief, so not coughing or sneezing right into someone else’s face, kinda made sense.

Yesterday, I was watching TV and caught the latest campaign by our Ministry of Health. We now have an official campaign, running through the media, advising people on how to stop the spread of the swine flu. With several hundreds of cases already diagnosed in our fairly small nation, I guess it’s about time.

One instruction caught my attention. They’re now telling us to sneeze and cough into our elbows. Since this was a new measure for me, I figured I’ll help the cause by announcing it here. Here’s the image from the MoH clip:

That guy is actually coughing, not smashing his fistless arm into his face. You can watch the entire clip on their website here.  And yes, I’m sorry, but it did make me chuckle…

So do the germs die once they hit the elbow? Is there some unknown substance in the elbow that kills germs? I thought there was some substance on my pants that killed germs. That is where i put mine after I sneeze into my hands.
