Every now and again, I shock my family with a stray animal that I get off the street and bring home. At least today it was a healthy medium size dog (past rescues included a huge and very sick dog, a black chicken, an injured heron and a giant bug).
I was driving through town this morning when I saw this little black dog running around on the road, getting in between the cars and almost getting run over. It looked pretty lost, and kept changing directions, so I figured it was a stray. Made a U-turn and started going after it. Silly little thing kept trotting on, quite fast and wouldn’t respond to my calling, “hey you, dog” in the middle of the street (it was loud enough, as it got quite a bunch of people staring at the mad lady shouting). Good thing I am getting back to running. I had pulled over, and had to literally run after the dog for a hundred yards or so (uphill it was too, mind!). Finally picked it up and ran back to the car (which happened to be blocking a side road too).
Drove off to the vet’s to see if “it” had a chip. No chip, and they couldn’t tell much about it, except that it was a fairly young dog, probably under six months old, and a female. Well, not much to do, but to take her home, leaving my details with the vet, who promised to try and help find a home for her if we couldn’t find the owners. The vet agreed that she was probably abandoned, and he also mentioned that while she’s very very cute, he thinks it will be hard to rehome her. He said something along the lines of “when people are looking to adopt a dog, this, ummm, type, isn’t what they have in mind.” In other words, she looks like a mutt and isn’t likely to win any canine beauty contest.
So, the nameless dog is with us now, as we’re trying to locate the owners. I posted on all the internet boards I could find, and will print out ads with her picture tomorrow and post it all over town. She’s fairly well behaved and the kids had a blast playing with her this afternoon, although she did bite them playfully and it scared them a little. The worse thing about her was that she came LOADED with tiny ticks. Took me a while to figure that out, as most of them were really really small, but ticks all the same. With this town being endemic for our local version of Lyme disease, carried by dog ticks, I am concerned. I did clean her before the kids showed up, but all the same, we did find ticks in the house and one on one of the boys too
Anyway, one more picture of our guest here. Wish us luck finding her owners, or new owners….

awwww…I think she’s cute! Kind of a deerhound look to her. The ticks are gross, though. I hope you find her a home soon!

Forward the message you posted on the internet boards to my email address, and I’ll forward it to the local Anglo list serve.

Thanks, but we decided we can’t keep her even for a few days. She’s going to the local pound today, where I hope either her previous or future owner can find her.
