The Arizona Page
his page covers our stay in Arizona - mostly at Tuscon, with a possible stop at Yuma, on our way to Southern California.
Sightseeing:
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum - “… combination zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden reflects the diverse flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert”. Mostly outdoors, so needs lots of sun screen and water. Estimated time: 3 hours.
Pima Air & Space Museum - Sounds like a very impressive museum for seeing WW2 airplanes, but not sure if it’s suitable for our kids’ attention span.
Admission: $13.50 adults. $9.00 children. Open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last admission at 4:00 p.m.Tuscon Children’s Museum - Looks like a nice not too big museum with various hands-on exhibits for kids.
Mondays 8-10; Tues-Sat 10-5; Sunday noon-5pm. $5 for kids and $7 for adults.Kitt Peak National Optical Astronomy Observatory - Recommended for lovers of astronomy - a real work station with scientists providing the tours. Again, not sure how the kids will take to it.
Open daily from 9am to 4pm. It’s free, unless you want to take the tour. The Kitt Peak Visitor Center offers three guided tours each day. Each tour lasts approximately one hour. The tours begin in the Visitor Center. A $4.00 per person (Adult) and $2.50 for Children (6-12) fee is requested for the guided tour.Tohono Chul Park - a nice park/gardens displaying desert landscape with nice walking trails.
$7 for adults. $2 for children. Park grounds are open from 8 am to 5 pm every day of the yearSabino Canyon - Nice park with tram/shuttle inside. Could be good with the kids, in that respect.
Day Pass $5 per vehicleT-Rex Museum - Near Tuscon and target kids, so should be interesting.
$5.00 per child Mon. - Sat. 10 am to 3 pm Sundays 12 pm to 4 pm Last admission of the day is at 2:00 Last movie shown at 2:00McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park - If we’re around Phoenix for a day or two, this could be a nice place to take the kids for an easy day out.
$1 per ticket, open daily 10:00 am - 7:00 PM in April.Rawhide - Western style area with shows, actors, train ride, donkey rides etc. Looks ok, only if we’re in the area. Looks a bit pricey and strange opening times.
Recommended by Mike, instead of Rawhide: Tombstone and Bisbee - Tombstone is just an hour from Tuscon so a likely destination for us. Bisbee is a bit further down the road. Two historic towns with some local museums and parks.
The Missions - San Xavier Mission sometimes called White Dove of the Desert. Historical Mission on Papago Indian Reservation at the edge of Tucson.
Ted de Grazia Gallery.
Closed on Mons and Tues. Weds-Sun 5:30pm-9:00pm. $15 for a free day pass or tickets for separate things.Accommodation:
Staying with Budd.
Eating Out:
Recommended by Mike: El Charro Cafe in Tuscon - mexican food. They say they’re family friendly, but we’ll have to see how our kids feel about eating in “proper” restaurants
As always - comments and feedback are welcome!
